Caryl was born in Ffynnongroyw, North Wales. She has been one of the outstanding Welsh language artists of her generation. A singer-composer of great versatility, she has appeared on TV in a variety of roles, as a presenter, actress, comedienne as well as a singer.

Caryl first came to prominence while still a pupil at Ysgol Glan Clwyd, St. Asaph, as a member of the SIDAN singing group.
